Professor Hugh Fullagar has been appointed Professor of Exercise and Sports Science at The University of Newcastle.

Academic Leadership

Professor Fullagar joins The University of Newcastle from Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital, Qatar where he was a Professor and Senior Researcher. A leading accredited sport & exercise scientist he has almost two decades of experience working with elite athletes, first responders and military to optimise performance, minimise injury risk and promote more effective recovery.

Before joining Aspetar, Hugh was as a Professor and Director of Postgraduate Studies at Reykjavik University in Iceland, where he continues to hold a fractional appointment, and earlier a senior lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney.

Background and Research

Originally from Australia and with a PhD in Sports Medicine from the University of Saarland, Germany, Hugh's research focuses on evidence-based strategies to enhance performance and lessen injury, particularly expanding knowledge of the connection between work demands, training load, tiredness, recovery (e.g., sleep), and injury. He has also worked as a sport scientist and coach with elite athletes in professional sports (NFL, NCAA), elite football (FIFA), and Olympic settings throughout Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia.
