Professor Bronwyn Hemsley has been appointed Head of School, School of Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle.

Academic and Professional Leadership

Bronwyn joins the University of Newcastle from the University of Technology Sydney, where she was a Professor of Speech Pathology and founding Head of the Discipline of Speech Pathology. Additionally, she served as a co-lead for the UTS Disability Research Network.

Background and Research

For more than 25 years, Professor Hemsley has held leading roles in the communication and disability sectors. She graduated with a PhD from the University of Sydney in 2008, held an NHMRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at The University of Queensland until 2012, and then a Discovery Early Career Research Award at the University of Newcastle (Australia). She is a Fellow of Speech Pathology Australia, a Fellow of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and a past Editor-in-Chief of the highest ranking speech pathology journal Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

Bronwyn is now Section Editor for the journal Current Developmental Disorders (Communication). Her recent research has focused on the use of social media by people with communication disability and their health providers, the use of e-health records for sharing health information across multiple services, and the safety of people with communication disability in hospital.
